Glenn Hartelius, PhD, is developing a transpersonal model of mind based on lived experience in dialogue with neuroscience. A central concept in transpersonal psychology is states of consciousness, and his goal is to develop a method for precisely defining states so they can be used in the development of state-specific scientific methods—a goal first proposed by Sofia University professor Charles Tart. In pursuit of this goal he has developed an Attention-Based Mindfulness Protocol as a way to enter the mindful state, and is developing research to test its efficacy. He is also engaged in testing his attentional processes in individuals with attention deficit disorders.

As editor of the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies, Dr. Hartelius is a strong believer that transpersonal psychology needs to publish more and better research. As secretary of the International Transpersonal Association, he promotes the worldwide field. He is co-editor of The Wiley-Blackwell Handbook of Transpersonal Psychology, the first-ever professional handbook to outline the field. He has worked extensively on a definition of transpersonal psychology, including leading research that distilled definitions from the first 35 years of the field’s existence into summary form. In addition to transpersonal psychology, his research interests include somatic psychology, consciousness studies, and phenomenology.

At Sofia University, Dr. Hartelius is Associate Professor, serving in both Residential and Global doctoral programs. Prior experience includes teaching work at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, California, and at Laney College in Oakland, California. In addition, Dr. Hartelius runs Attention Dynamics®, a mindfulness training company, and a private practice in somatic coaching and attentional skills training.

Michaela Aizer, CCHT, co-founder of Attention Dynamics®, has been a transformative educational activist for more than 30 years as a counselor, teacher, public speaker, organizer, and mentor. She has worked with thousands of clients and students, sharing her lifelong commitment to personal transformation with a focus on authentic communication, respect for individual worldviews, and celebration of community as a creative and healing force. Through the template of Attention Dynamics®, she shows how to transform empathic experiences of “merged” intuitive “hits” into a navigable somatic presence setting a new bar for communication and professional ethics.
